April EQ Theme: I am a good friend!

This months theme has been about FRIENDSHIPS, ‘I am a good friend’

The teachers are making an special effort to highlight what makes a good friend and why it’s important to be kind and share.

Some useful tips and reminders about promoting friendship and play at home:

Schedule playdates and ensure they have activities ready for them: Don’t just assume that having a playdate will mean you get to relax and have a cup of tea. Be ready to observe your child and engage when they need help with their behaviour. Having activities ready, whether it is a craft or a physical activity ready will prevent boredom and encourage positive play.

Help them to problem solve: When children disagree or fight help them work it out. Giving a consequence may be necessary but more importantly the children need to talk about the problem, how they felt, and what they could do to resolve the situation. Too often it is easier to sort the problem for them but these opportunities need to be seized as learning experiences about social interaction.

Role model positive and patient communication with other adults: Children are always watching how you respond and they mirror that behaviour. If they see you yelling and getting angry with your partner or your friends on a regular basis they will see this as acceptable behaviour.
