My name is Colleen van Eyk and I am the Starfish class teacher. I have an assistant, Mrs Chitehwe, who assists me with my children daily. The Starfish class are the older 4 turning 5 year old age group. My qualifications are a 3 year Diploma in Educare N7 and a 1 year diploma in Grade R through UNISA. We run an Integrated day along with the Angelfish class, therefore spending 1 week in the Resource Room and 1 week in the Art Room. The Resource Room consists of all the educational areas such as the book corner, puzzles and educational games area along with a large fantasy area. The Art Room is where all messy creative activities are done. It also has a large block and construction area. The children are encouraged daily to integrate between the two classrooms. The Starfish class has direct access to the back garden, for movement rings outside. At Fhpps, we concentrate on the IQ and EQ of the children. We have daily morning/theme rings, movement/music rings, along with creative art, quiet time and story time. Outside playtime is vital for young children and we spend plenty of time outside, socialising with our peers. We go on outings every term which fit in with our themes eg. Beach, Forest, Ostrich Farm. In the Starfish class we try and encourage our children to be independent and responsible. They assist us daily in keeping our classroom clean and tidy, each having a helper day. The starfish children love having fun, being creative in the art room or playing a fun educational game like Uno. Boundaries and routine are very important in the Starfish class. The children learn early on in the year that there are consequences to their behaviour. If conflict arises we always discuss this amongst the children concerned. I grew up in Fish Hoek, attending Fish Hoek Pre Primary School when I was 4/5 years old. It is so wonderful to give back to the school where I began my educational journey. It was then and still is the BEST school in the valley. At school, I love having fun with my children, climbing the jungle gym or playing ball games like cricket, rugby or basket ball. At home, I enjoy gardening, watching movies or sewing. I am happiest when surrounded by my family, friends, work colleagues and the happy, smiley children in my class.
